In the framework of the project “Enhancing the competencies of young women from rural areas of Kyrgyzstan through Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education” with the support of The Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI-2019-ASTNA-KG-0009), teachers who went through the TOT in December 2019 will be conducting pilot open lecture using STEM techniques from January 23 to January 30, 2020.

The project is aimed at teaching young girls from rural areas of Issyk-Kul region through STEM methods and technologies, as well as improving the skills of secondary school teachers in the region in applying these methods in teaching.

Informatics teacher of Beishenbek Ukuev school Dilbar Ryspaeva held a open lecture in her school on use of STEM methodologies immediately after the TOT in December.

In January, she held an open lecture, as a pilot class, for students of the 9th grade. The topic of the lesson was editing ready images. During the lesson, the teacher applied electronic testing on the material learned using (kahoot.it) via mobile phones. To develop creative thinking and solve probleming abilities, the method of geometric challenge was used, in which the students created a hexagon. For the next session, they had to think about how to set it in motion. This task served as a smooth transition to the next question – editing ready images.  The students chose several tasks where outdoor advertising, information boards, and posts like environmental conservation and selling local agricultural products. During group work the students learned how to cut, change colors, add text using ready images on the computer. Students voiced in reflection what was difficult or easy to do, how they solved problems, in what stages planning is necessary, etc. Lesson was held in a friendly atmosphere, the students and teachers noted that all applicable methods are interesting not only for Informatics lessons, but also to other subjects.

As part of the project, it is planned to hold a final conference in Karakol, where teachers ‘ presentations on the results of these pilot classes will be discussed. This project was made possible by the support of the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives. Strong support in the organization was also provided by the Regional Institute of Education and the city Department of education.

The initiator of the project, Regional Institute of Central Asia (RICA), attracts experienced instructors, trainers, and innovative teachers in order to enhance interest in STEM education, as well as to draw attention to the education of girls and their support in professional development. RICA will make every effort to implement this project effectively and is ready to cooperate with interested organizations in solving the above mentioned tasks.
